On Saturday, March 7, the Historic Sault Ste. Marie Métis Council proudly hosted its first annual International Women’s Day event, bringing together women and children from across the community for a day focused on connection, creativity, and giving back.
Held at the Northern Community Centre, the event welcomed over 50 women and children who gathered to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Give to Gain.” The day featured a variety of hands-on activity stations designed to reflect that theme and encourage participants to share kindness within the community.
Attendees enjoyed creating handmade bracelets, decorating cookies, crafting fabric flower pins, and writing thoughtful cards for Elders at the FJ Davey Home. These activities not only offered a chance for creativity and fun, but also emphasized the importance of generosity, appreciation, and intergenerational connection within the Métis community.
"This was a fabulous gathering, Lisa and Shelby did so well organizing this event, even though they had a location glitch they made sure the event went on with great success. Everyone who attended had a great time going from station to station and we all really had fun. Congratulations Lisa and Shelby. I look forward to the next event as do so many others" Region 4 Women's Representative and North Channel Métis Council Chair June Smart
The atmosphere throughout the day was filled with laughter, collaboration, and meaningful conversation as families worked together on their projects.
“The overwhelming success of the day serves as a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and unity embedded in our Métis community,” said Lisa Kisch, HSSMMC Women’s Representative.
A special thank you goes to June Smart, who generously donated a beautiful handmade beaded poppy as one of the event’s draw prizes. The thoughtful contribution added an extra element of excitement to the day and served as a meaningful symbol of remembrance and Métis artistry.

The Historic Sault Ste. Marie Métis Council looks forward to building on the success of this gathering and continuing to create opportunities that celebrate and support Métis women, families, and community connections in the years to come.
