HURON-SUPERIOR REGIONAL MÉTIS COMMUNITY POLICIES
Below you’ll find the regional policy documents for the Huron-Superior Regional Métis Community, whose rights, interests and way of life are constitutionally protected under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982.
In a governmental context, policy development is the systematic, multi-stage process of identifying public problems, analyzing options, and creating, implementing, and evaluating solutions in the form of laws, programs, and regulations to achieve specific government goals. This iterative process ensures that government actions are aligned with public needs and priorities, providing a framework for decision-making, resource allocation, and accountability to citizens.
The drafting of policy at a regional community level is an act of exercising the inherent right to self-government and self-determination. The 2019 Métis Government Recognition and Self-Government Agreement, recognises that the Huron-Superior Regional Métis Community, and the Métis Nation of Ontario have the authority to make decisions over our own affairs in areas like education, health and wellness, child and family services, justice, and culture; to freely determine our political status, and pursue our economic, social, and cultural development.
For generations, Métis people have been subject to decisions made by governments other than our own. Often those governments have deliberately excluded Métis rights, histories, perspectives or interests. Writing our own policies is a way to reverse colonial legacies by reclaiming control over decisions that affect the interests of the Métis Community. This is not just a symbolic change, it’s a practical enactment of our inherent rights to set our own priorities, implement policies that reflect our values, and design culturally appropriate services. Regional policy development helps strengthen Métis governance structures and institutions. The regional policies of the Huron-Superior Regional Métis Community are created by Métis people, for Métis people and address the real needs of the community.
