Honouring Tradition: North Channel Métis Council Harvesting Workshop

On Saturday, April 18, 2026, the North Channel Métis Council proudly hosted a meaningful and educational harvesting event led by Captain of the Hunt Steve Gjos. The gathering brought citizens together for a day of learning, sharing, and reconnecting with important Métis traditions.

Participants were welcomed into the council office, where they had the opportunity to learn about traditional harvesting practices, as well as current rules and regulations surrounding harvesting. The workshop also explored the significance of harvesting medicines and their traditional uses, offering valuable knowledge that continues to be passed down through generations.

Following the workshop, attendees gathered to enjoy a delicious meal prepared by Captain of the Hunt Gjos, featuring moose chili and bannock, alongside wild rice generously provided by PCMNO Senator Donna Grenier. The shared meal offered a chance for community members to connect, reflect, and continue conversations in a warm and welcoming environment.

The event was also attended by Region 5 Captain of the Hunt Wayne Zammit, whose presence further highlighted the importance of knowledge-sharing and regional connection.

To close the gathering, North Channel Senator Dennis McLeod offered a prayer, bringing a thoughtful and respectful end to the day’s activities.

The North Channel Métis Council extends its gratitude to all who attended and contributed to the success of this event. Opportunities like this continue to strengthen community ties and ensure that Métis harvesting knowledge and traditions are preserved and celebrated for future generations.
